THE HISTORY OF THE MONET BRAND
Providence, Rhode Island USA was an area in which many costume jewellery businesses flourished in the early years of the twentieth Century. Monet’s history starts here too. In 1928 two brothers, Michael and Jay Chernow produced gold plated monograms for applying to handbags at their Monocraft Products Company. Around 1937 they started manufacturing jewellery under the brand name of Monet.
Their range was produced in plated metals and also in the 1940s in Sterling Silver too. The designs of the company are stylish and the products are durable with their plated items having triple coatings for a long lasting and luxurious effect.
The Monocraft Products Company, that produced Monet jewellery, has had many parent companies over its almost 100 years of history. It was acquired by General Mills in 1968, Crystal Brands Jewellery Group from 1989 to 1994, 1994 to 2000 by Chase Capital Partners Lattice Holding, and in 2000 was taken over by Liz Claiborne Inc. the fashion brand. At this time the production of the jewellery moved out of the USA.
Monet’s designs are signed and some have copyright status as shown by the C copyright marking. They are collected and easy to wear and keep up with current design trends.
