Sterling Silver Swallow or Swift Brooch 1940s with Marcasite Eye (SOLD)
This vintage sterling silver brooch is a lovely large size. The swallow or swift has a wing span of 3 inches and is 2.25 inches from the tip of the beak to the tip of the forked tail. This is a heavy, good quality piece of jewellery and it falls into the romantic sweetheart category. The use of a swallow or swift is symbolic and it means 'I will return to you'. You can see why airmen and pilots in the second World War would embrace that sentiment and gift jewellery featuring these birds to their girl back home, their mother or even their sister. This silver brooch has been cast and it has great detail with lots of feathers and a neat natural faceted marcasite stone for the eye. It fastens with a 'c' type clasp and is in excellent condition. It is simply marked 'silver' on the reverse.
