Silver and Marcasite Brooch - 1930s - 1940s - Two Swallows or Swifts (SOLD)
This Vintage Bird Brooch depicts a pair of Swallows or Swifts on the wing. It is a romantic sweetheart brooch because there is a pair of lovebirds and the use of the Swallow or Swift means ' I will return..'. This gorgeous old brooch is studded with shiny grey natural marcasite stones and each bird has a little yellow glass eye too. Made of Sterling Silver this collectable brooch is simply marked with the words 'Sterling Silver' so it may be an American made brooch dating from the World War Two era when Sterling silver was used in costume jewellery due to restrictions on the use of other metals due to the war effort. Birds in flight were often the favourite choice of anyone connected to the Air Force. How romantic it would be if this super brooch had been a gift from a Pilot to his love! This silver brooch fastens with an early type of guarded clasp and is in great condition. It measures 4.5 cms by 2.5cms.
