Spanish Toledo Work - Moth or Butterfly Brooch - 1950s

What a fabulous find this Vintage Moth or possibly Butterfly Brooch is! This pin would appeal to anyone who collects antique Butterfly, Bug and Insect brooches and jewellery. The brooch is Spanish and is a beautiful and early example of Toledo jewellery, possibly made for the emerging tourist trade. Toledo work ( inlay on steel or Damascene ) was originally used to decorate swords. It then was the perfect traditional way to decorate all kinds of jewellery for souvenir and Spanish wear. This vintage insect brooch is most detailed with our butterfly or moth having a textured body and abdomen, little bends to his legs and two tiny antennae on his head. But the most exciting bit of all is the decorative wings. Here is where the traditional Toledo workmanship can be seen at its very best. On this piece of jewelry the wings are black steel that have been inlaid with two colours of gold metal in a flower and leaf pattern.   The wing tips are richly decorated with two colours of gold which have then been engraved to add yet more detail.  The abdomen part of this vintage brooch is finished in a gold effect with the decorative steel wings attached onto the body. This vintage brooch is in excellent condition. The Toledo butterfly or moth pin measures approximately 1.5 inches by 1.25 inches. This great vintage pin would look stunning on to the lapel of your jacket as if it has just landed on you!
