Unusual Spanish Toledo Metal Moth-A1940s - 1950s brooch (SOLD)
What a fabulous find this Vintage Moth Brooch is! This pin would appeal to anyone who collects antique Butterfly, Bug and Insect brooches and jewellery. The brooch is Spanish and is a beautiful and early example of Toledo jewellery, possibly made for the emerging tourist trade. Toledo work ( inlay on steel ) was originally used to decorate swords. It then was the perfect traditional way to decorate all kinds of jewellery for souvenir and Spanish wear. This vintage moth brooch is most detailed with a textured body and abdomen, little bends to his legs and two tiny antennae on his head. But the most exciting bit of all is the decorative wings. Here is where the traditional Toledo workmanship can be seen at its very best. On this piece of jewelry the wings are black steel that have been inlaid with two colours of gold metal in a flower and leaf pattern. Most of the brooch is finished in a goldtone brushed effect with the steel wings bolted onto the body. Even if you turn this lovely old brooch onto its back it still is a very natural looking insect! This vintage brooch is in excellent condition. The moth pin measures approximately 1 inch by 1.5 inches. This great vintage pin would look stunning pinned next to a fabric flower as a hat jewel but would also sit , asif it had just landed, on to the lapel of your jacket!
