I am so delighted to offer this fabulous Lea Stein Cockerel Brooch that I really am going to 'Crow' about him! This pin is one of Judith Miller's personal favourites according to her article on the subject of Lea Stein. Here we have a cheeky chap straight from the farmyard and he is ready to move to the lapel of your coat or jacket to make a fun statement. This Lea Stein cockerel pin has a central acrylic panel in ivorine effect with an ivorine beak. For his fantastic plumed tail feathers there’s marbled reds, whites and greens. The cockerel's comb and wattle are bright red, his head brown and the beak is in the same ivorine effect as his body. To the reverse we have a white metal 'v' shaped pin with roll over type closure marked 'Lea Stein Paris' and the laminate effects are as delightful on the reverse as they are on the front of this brooch. The size of this brooch is 2.5 inches by 2 inches at the widest parts and the brooch is in excellent order. Lea Stein has a real talent for capturing animals and birds and making them very appealing. She has designed jewellery and buttons for 60 years and this history of her business makes fascinating reading.
LEA STEIN was born in Paris in 1931 and worked as a dress designer. She began making her now famous Jewellery when her husband, Fernand Steinberger, ( a Plastics Chemist ) discovered a process of laminating cellulose acetate to create a unique range of colours & patterns.
Buttons for her frocks were their first products; followed by brooches, bangles and earrings. The factory was forced to close in the 1980’s but has since re-opened much to the relief of costume jewellery collectors and Lea Stein fans. Lea Stein loves to produce designs based on animals and flowers. Now she is quite an elderly lady but still introduces a couple of new designs each year.
Each brooch has the trademark ‘V’ shaped pin on the back and is signed: ‘LEA STEIN PARIS’. The manufacturing process used means that no two pieces are exactly alike. The fabulous designs, the ease of wearing and their quirky appeal are just some of the reasons why they are so collected around the world
