English Antique Silver Buckles - Victorian Hallmarked Birmingham 1900
Whenever I find pairs of small sized silver buckles I always have a conundrum - are they for wearing on a gent's knee breeches or should they go on ladies shoes or maybe they were designed for children's shoes? I am unsure what this delightful pair of buckles were originally meant to adorn but I am certain that they would add a really beautiful detail to any modern garment. They would also fit well into a collection of antique buckles. Each sterling silver buckle has been cast and has a pierced and engraved pattern around the rim with a daisy type flower at each side. There is a plain silver bar across the middle which would hold the buckle in place. The reverse of each silver buckle is plain and shiny. The hallmark is hidden within the decorative front of the buckle but there is the Lion Passant mark to show that it is English 925 Sterling Silver, the Anchor mark to indicate that it was assayed in Birmingham and a letter which indicates the year 1900 when they were hallmarked. Each buckle measures a little over 1.5 inches by 1 inch and they are in extremely good order. There is just the expected light surface scratches commensurate with their age. I have left this pair of antique silver buckles with their patina as it enhances the engraved decoration and ensures that they look their age. That said it would be very simple to clean up this pair of English Antique Silver Buckles if you wanted them to look new and shiny! The price stated is for the pair of buckles.
