A Butterfly Brooch - Vintage Mother of Pearl Butterfly Pin from The Holy Land -
Butterfly brooches are popular and hand carved ones especially so as they are unique - there will only be the one exactly like this. This appealing vintage Butterfly Pin is made of creamy white natural mother of pearl shell. It is lustrous and a good size being a chunky one eighth of an inch thick, having a wing span of 1.5 inches and a length the same. The wings have circles along their edges and slash carved decoration; the body is nicely shaped and has a mix of cross cut and slash cuts there are two little dot eyes and pierced shaped antennae. Fastening with a white metal secure roll over guarded pin clasp the brooch is offered in excellent condition.
The Art Nouveau period (late 19th and early 20th Century) saw a resurgence of interest in insect jewels with a wonderful variety of winged insects including Butterflies, Moths, Bees, Dragonflies and Beetles being hand carved in natural materials like Mother-of-Pearl, Shell and Horn. This brooch is from a later period - possibly the 1950s to 1960s but it is delightful and naively executed.
This wonderful hand carved Mother of Pearl Butterfly Brooch is from the Holy Land as it has the word ‘Jerusalem’ stamped on its white metal pin back. Butterflies are often considered to symbolise the Resurrection as they begin as an egg, then caterpillar, then lay dormant in a chrysalis bursting forth, changed and winged as a beautiful butterfly. Jerusalem carved brooches often include the Cross, The Star of David and A Dove representing Peace.
This vintage pin would look stunning on to the lapel of your jacket as if it has just landed on you!
