Pair of English Silver Buckles - Edwardian Silver Halllmarked 1907
Here we have a conundrum- are these beautiful old buckles for knee breeches or for ladies' shoes or even for children's shoes? I cannot be sure what their original use was but I am certain that they are a delightful pair of collectable silver buckles which could be used today for modern clothing or added to a collection of antique silver buckles. This neat pair of old silver buckles have each been beautifully hand engraved with swirls and lines to make an all over pattern on the front. They are oval in shape with an open centre with a bar and two sharp prongs to hold these buckles neatly in place when in use. The reverse is in plain silver with a full English halllmark - the Lion Passant for 925 Sterling Silver, the Anchor to indicate that they were assayed in Birmingham and the letter 'e' which indicates they were hallmarked in the year 1907 - making them from the English Edwardian period. They also carry the makers' mark - 'A & L Ld'. They are in very good condition with just some light surface scratches to the silver commensurate with their age. I have left them with all the dark patina that shows they are genuine antique silver, but if your preference is for shiny bright silver buckles it would be simplicity itself to clean this pair until they shine! I am so happy they are still a pair, so often antique items which were once a pair or a set get separated in use. Finally, the size - each buckle measures 1.25 inches by 0.75 inches.
