1902 Birmingham Hallmarked Silver Button(SOLD)
This perfect Art Nouveau silver button has a classical head design. The outside edges are irregular and swirly and the figure is surrounded by a floral border. The face shows great strength, so I would not be at all suprised if this figure represented a classical Greek or Roman Goddess. The button bears the hallmark for Birmingham assay office - an anchor, the lion to show sterling silver and the letter 'c' for the year 1902. There are also the makers marks 'S.M.L'. I have been reliably informed that this is the makers' mark for Samuel M Levi of Frederick Street and Vyse Street, Birmingham. The button is marked on the front decorative surface, a common practice at the beginning of the 20th Century. The antique silver button is in excellent condition with just faint surface scratches. The button has a self shank, which means that the loop at the back is also made of sterling silver. This loop is large enough for a safety pin to be placed through to allow a button to be worn as a brooch. I have another exactly the same but the price shown here is for one single button but you could buy a pair if you wished! Each silver button measures approx 2.5cms in diameter.
