Vintage Sterling Silver Yellow Jewelled Thistles Brooch - Scottish Pin dated 1960 (SOLD)

A Vintage Scottish Double Thistles Pin in Sterling Silver set with two bright yellow jewels is on offer here. The thistles in the centre of this oval shaped brooch sit proud of the background and are very naturalistic with detailed leaves and tops.  The two facet cut jewels are claw set and are lead crystal glass with a foiled reverse.  The open oval frame has an etched design of  thistle flowers on the silver too.  I can date this brooch most accurately to the year 1960 as it has a full set of hallmarks and the maker's mark WBs. The hallmarks consist of a thisle for Scottish Sterling silver, a Castle for Edinburgh and a Celtic letter 'E' for the year 1960. The Thistle is Scotland's emblem and so is a traditional design often seen on items of costume jewellery from Scotland.  This brooch is a nice size being 4.5cms by 3.5 cms.  To the reverse you can tell that the brooch was rhodium coated in the past as there are light scratches. The brooch closes with a secure roll-over style clasp and is in very good vintage condition.

Do you know why the Scots use the Thistle as their floral emblem? Well legend has it that a Viking raider attacking during the night stepped onto a thistle. The sharp thistle thorns made him yell out in pain and that cry alerted the Scots to the danger and saved them. What a great reason to choose such a proud wild flower! Hurray for the thistle!
