Vintage Powder Compact - 1950's London Scenes
Vintage Powder Compacts with a London connection should be very sought after at the moment with all eyes on London for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Year and the London Olympics - WOW! This lovely vintage compact is unused and in very good condition. It is made in a gold plated brass metal and the front has engine engraved images of some of London's most iconic buildings. To the top centre is the word 'LONDON' and underneath this is Buckingham Palace. Next across the centre we have to the left Tower Bridge, Piccadilly with the iconic Eros statue then to the right hand side Saint Paul's. The Houses of Parliament are on the bottom of the compact. All the place names have been engraved on banner like backgrounds and the outer edge of the top surface has a 'pie crust' pattern around it. The reverse has an all over engine turned engraved pattern on it too. There is so much detail on this compact and the overall effect is super. I have had other vintage compacts with similar designs so would guess this was a popular tourist souvenir of London in the 1950s. I cannot find a maker's name or brand to this compact but the sweet little original puff has the word 'Darling' on it. This is a slim compact so would have been made for loose powder, pre dating the 'blocks' which became popular in the 1960s. This Vintage London Compact still retains its original powder sieve too. There is a black grosgrain sleeve included in the price. Dimensions are : Diameter 3 inches depth just under half an inch. So for Vintage Compact collectors, London visitors, those who will celebrate the jubilee in vintage style or anyone else who loves vintage fashion buy now, I only have this one example. 2012 is the year for London, will it be the year you snap up this Vintage London compact?
