Vintage Handbag - 1950s to 1960s Beads, Sequins and Pearls with a leaf design (SOLD)
This evening purse dates from the late 1950s into the early 1960s. It is entirely covered with small sequins which themselves are held in place by tiny round pearlised glass beads. These jewels have all been stitchedto completely cover both sides of the bag. Then there is another beautiful decorative layer of white seen beads applied in the shape of leaves and within them the use of elongated faux pearl beads. This is exactly the type of bag which would have been hand made in Hong Kong. During the 1950s and 1960s quite a few lovely beadwork evening bags were imported into the UK from Hong Kong when it was part of the British Empire. This evening purse is most appealing and is also a good size being approximately 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches. It fastens with a gilt kissing ty clasp which has the advantage of inset diamante jewels. There is a good, robust gold tone snake chain handle, which is 12 inches long in total. The interior which is cream satin, has a pocket to hold a mirror. The interior has a black mark ( which you can see in the photos) and also has some greening caused by the metal hinges on the frame. These do not detract from the bag in anyway, they are just signs that it is a genuine vintage item and that it has been around for 50 plus years! From the outside the bag is in excellent, clean condition. Its creamy colour and the rich, deep beading would make it very suitable for a bride or to use for balls and parties. Handbags of this quality are perfect for adding to a collection of vintage handbags and purses.
