Victorian White Metal Hairpin with Dazzling Paste Stones (SOLD)
It is hard to believe that this hairpin dates from the 19th Century as the paste stones are so bright they shine like the best real diamonds! Each sparkling stone is a little more than 8mm in diameter with the whoe accessory measuring 5cms by almost 10cms. The hairpin has two proper metal prongs and the paste set bar sits on top. Each paste is faceted, foil backed and prong-set in closed cups. The cups are mounted between two parallel open wires to ensure that there is no fussy distractions from the 'wow factor' of the paste! When this type of comb was in vogue, in the later part of the 19th Century, ladies usually had long hair wound up on top or to the sides of their head; it was not uncommon to use false hair to add volume to the style. This antique hair ornament would be perfect for wedding day wear and the pins on the comb would enable it to secure a veil in place too.
