Victorian Sterling Silver Heart Shaped Belt Buckle - Antique Silver Buckle(SOLD)
Victorian silver belt buckles are getting harder to source. This particular example is a well-made, cast silver buckle in a romantic heart shape. It is a substantial weight and is well decorated with flowers, swirls and foliage. It has two good, pointed prongs from a central bar and a rectangular device on the back to help retain the belt fabric. This antique buckle is in excellent condition and is robust for everyday wear. It works out at approximately 3 inches by 3 inches at its widest parts with the middle bar allowing a maximum width of 1.75 inches for the belt but around 1.5 inches would probably be the ideal to allow for ease of movement. It is hard to believe ithat this amazing buckle is 120 years old! It bears the full English hallmarks you would expect on such a high quality piece of silver jewellery - namely the Lion passant to show it is 925 Sterling Silver, a Leopard head to show it was assayed in London and the letter R for the year 1892. The maker's marks are 'SJ' indicating that this item is the work of Samuel Jacob who was silversmithing between 1892 and 1916. This buckle would be a wonderful gift for a sweetheart and a romantic Valentine's day gift.
