Victorian Silver Hair Comb - Hallmarked Sheffield 1899 by James Dixon (SOLD)
This is a beautiful English Victorian hallmarked sterling silver hair accessory. The Hair comb has a fine pierced and engraved design to the top with two tines or prongs each with a fold in the centre to help it to stay in the hair. The decorative work is delicate and beautiful and the comb curves slightly to add a further dimension to the design. This type of comb would have been positioned in the high hairstyle of the Victorian era. That said these combs are so easy to use with today’s long hair or can be used to anchor a bun or up do hairstyle. A quality item, the hair-comb measures approximately five inches in length by almost two and half inches in width. This silver hair-comb has the lion passant to indicate that it is silver, the crownsymbol for the Sheffield assay office and the date letter for the year 1899. The makers mark is the letters JD & S for quality makers James Dixon and Son. Offered in excellent condition this comb would work well for a special occasion such as a ball or wedding but would be equally wearable everyday for work or relaxing at the weekend in jeans and a t shirt! It’s a fabulous, wearable piece of genuine Victorian jewellery.
