Two Part Silver Buckle- Classical Ladies' Heads - 19th Century Continental European
This two part silver buckle has two silver roundels each with a classical lady's head in the centre. the ladies face one another and are each of a different design. they are raised up in relief and have good detail. Surrounding the ladies on each piece is a pierced trellis work with square shapes with small flowers within each one. There is also a raised line design surrounding each head and a double dot design bordering the central portraits and a single dot design bordering each roundel. I have found some silver marks on the front of the connector bar on one of the pieces but they are very hard to read. They are not English and I assume this piece to be continental silver but I cannot say whether it is Sterling or a lower % of pure silver that was often used in some countries in Europe in the past. The buckle measures 3 inches by 1.5 inches and it is in excellent condition. I believe it to be a 19th century piece in the classical style - one portrait lady has a crown of laurel leaves in Roman style and the other a type of headscarf which is reminiscent of Greek style. This buckle hooks together in the centre with a tounge and loop style clasp. There are four loops on it for sewing to fabric.
