Elegant and beautiful it is hard to find hair combs from this era that are in such good order. Here we have an antique hair comb which comes from the end of the 19th Century up to the beginning of the 20th Century. It is likely that this wonderful jewel is French in origin. The real silver top has a 935 mark which is Continental European and means it has a higher real silver content than Sterling silver - 935 out of the 1000. The comb itself is made of golden horn and is in very good order with just a few surface scratches that you would expect on natural horn of this age. The tines or teeth of this antique haircomb measure 7cms in length and are gently curved. The top of the comb has lots of paste crystal jewels set in the Silver. The silver jewelled top measures 12 cms by 2.5cms. There is an open set nature to the design with palmate and swirled features. In England you would say that this comb is a transitional piece Edwardian into the Art Deco era. This particular hair accessory would be at home on the set of Downton Abbey and it is likely that hair jewels of this quality would be for classy ladies at that time. It is just right for classy ladies today too! I can see this particular hair ornament being wonderful for a bride.
