St. Cuthbert's Cross Pendant by Miracle (SOLD)
This is a wonderful example of Anglo Saxon style jewellery by 'Miracle'. I am always delighted to come across necklaces and pendants as there seems to be less of them around than the more usual Miracle Brooches. This Anglo Saxon Style Cross is in a style know as a St. Cuthbert's Cross. The original St. Cuthbert's Cross dates from the 7th century AD. It was made of gold and had garnets inlaid into it. This Anglo-Saxon cross was actually found buried with St Cuthbert in Durham Cathedral and is now on display in the Cathedral Museum. The Miracle Company designers have been inspired by jewels of this type. The signed Miracle St. Cuthbert's Cross has panels of flat glass pieces in yellow, orange and white which are enamel like in appearance. It is also jewelled with a banded milky white cabouchon in the centre and has four further glass gems set into it. These glass pieces are likely to be in imitation of a banded agate and they give the brooch a soft colourway which is very attractive. The metal for this brooch has textured patterns to the front and reverse, typical of Miracle workmanship. The metal has a soft gold bronze effect. It has a fixed loop to the top of the design and the chain has a texture on it too. The chain is 25 inches in length and has a push clip type closure. I purchased this piece of vintage Miracle jewellery exactly as it is but I am unsure if the chain is an original Miracle chain for this piece as the colour is slightly more silvery. This doesn't detract from the item at all. I would estimate this piece to date from the 1970's onwards. The pendant, which measures approximately 1.75 inches in diameter bears the classic 'Miracle' signature ( Miracle word underscored) on the reverse where there is also another mark which is the word BRITAIN in block capital letters. This fabulous piece of vintage costume jewelry is in very good condition and would appeal to collectors of Anglo Saxon style and Miracle jewellery alike .
