SOLD Art Nouveau Button - English Silver Hallmarked 1912
This is a very pretty single button with a classic Art Nouveau design. The button has an Honesty or Lily Pad type shape to the centre with swirling open designs around it. It is not completely round in shape as it has an interesting little dip, another typical Art Nouveau feature. This antique silver button has a full hallmark for Birmingham stamped on the front. There is an Anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office, A Lion Passant to show that it is an English Sterling Silver button and the letter 'n' for the year 1912. There is what I think may be a partial maker's mark of a star and the capital letter B also. It is likely that button was made by the casting process and it was probably made as well as assayed in Birmingham where there was much jewellery making and silversmithing at in the Victorian times and in the first half of the 20th Century. The button has a diameter of approximately 2cms and has a self shank. It is fairly chunky with a good solid feel to it and is in very good condition with just a few surface scratches which you would expect on vintage and antique jewellery of this age.
