SOLD 1940's Silver Ballerinas Brooch - Pair of Ballet Dancers Pin - F. Massingham Iconic Design

This is an excellent example of post-war British design with an Iconic Ballerinas brooch by Frederick Massingham for the company D.H. Phillips.  It is one of a series that the artist produced in silver in the late 1940s and early 1950s which all featured Ballet Dancers. The pins were produced in two sizes, some designs featured a single ballerina and some a couple.   This particular Ballerinas Brooch is made of cast sterling silver and is clearly hallmarked in Birmingham with the year mark for 1948 being a capital 'X' It also has the DHP maker's Mark and a design registration mark 853615 on it.   This dancers pin is a small sized example, measuring just 4.5cms  by 3 cms at is widest points.  The ballerinas on this brooch are very detailed, you can see the folds in each dancer's full skirt and the coronets in their hair.  They definitely look as if they could be dancing in Swan Lake. Pirouetting up on their points, each with a leg stretched out behind -  one has hands raised above her head, the other delicately outstretched in front. What a wonderful gift this would be for anyone who loves dancing especially The Ballet!  Some of the collection of Fred Massingham's designs are on display in the Jewellery area of the UK's Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.  The brooch is in good condition and fastens with a curved silver guard over the pin. I have left the patina of age on the reverse, easily cleaned with silver polish if you want it gone.
