Naval Crown Brooch with red enamel - Sterling Silver- Bar Brooch Style - 1940s
This is a Sterling Silver bar Pin, which could be used as a Sweetheart brooch or as a tie pin. It has a large and intricate silver Naval Crown in the centre. There is a red enamel border to the lower edge of the crown. The brooch dates from circa 1940s and has the word 'Silver' on the back bar but there is no detail to show who the makers may be but it is very similar to work by the company 'Page of Plymouth'. This silver brooch or tie pin is in excellent condition, measures 5.5cms along the bar pin with the naval crown symbol measuring 1.5cms by 2cms. The actual fixing pin is in brass type metal which is retained by the silver clasp on the bar pin.
The Navy Crown was first used in Roman times and it depicts ship's sails and sterns cleverly arranged in a crown shape. This cast silver version is extremely detailed and benefits from a red enamel edge to the underside of the crown.
