Jewelled Hair Comb - Early 20th Century - Celluloid and Bohemian Filigree - Very Decorative (SOLD)
Long haired ladies and collectors of early hair ornaments and accessories will love this beautiful hair comb. So too will brides looking for an original period hair comb. Dating to the first quarter of the 20th Century - 1900 to the early 1920s - it has all the glamour associated with award-winning popular tv dramas like Parade's End and Downton Abbey. The celluloid used for this comb is thicker than most and so it is incredibly robust and wearable. That said, it is fairly heavy so only suitable for people with a lot of hair to support it. This comb is a useful hair ornament with its four sturdy 'tines' or teeth which will hold it neatly in place in your bun or up-do hairstyle. It is in a faux tortoiseshell or blonde horn colour. This haircomb is decorated with a panel of pressed filigree in what is known as the Bohemian style. Many items of jewellery were made of jewel-set pressed filigree metals and the Bohemian area ( former Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary) was well know for its skilled craftsmen and women who created this kind of adornment in metals, glass and early plastics. This wonderful hair comb has a large panel of filigree and jewels to the top. It has just one piece of filigree in gold tone brass applied to the top on inset pins. The comb itself has an ' open' design which accomodates the panel to perfection. The decoration consists of one panel with five 'fingers' of filigree metal - four swirled and the central one in an elongated kite shape. The metal, which has a good antique patina, has decorations of tiny daisy like flowers, balls, curves and swirls. In milled cup settings are faceted glass jewels and cabouchon jewels in green, blue, yellow, amber orange, mauve and red. These jewels have a variety of shapes. The largest is an upside-down teardrop in a dark blue gold speckled glass ( imitating the gemstone Lapis Lazuli ). Next there are three square cut jewels - two to imitate amethyst and one in amber colour. Five Marquise shaped stones are next and these are two in a peridot green colour, two in an amber yellow and one in a purple shade. To complete the look we have cabouchon domed glass gems in two sizes and in the following colours:- sapphire blue, ruby red, amber gold, amethyst mauve and emerald green. This comb measures 14cms by 9 cms at is widest and longest points - the top is 6.5 cms and the teeth are 7.5 cms. The jewel-set haircomb is in Excellent condition.
