Japanese Lacquer Hair Pin (Kanzashi) Circa 1920s - 1930s Showa Period (SOLD)
This nice long hair pin, known as Kanzashi, is made of a light weight lacquered wood. The colour is cinnebar orange with hand decorated work in gold, silver, black, green and burgundy tones. The hair pick consists of a stick with a shaped finial with a nice round decorated disc. The disc has decoration on both sides. The back has bamboo leaves hand painted on it whilst the front is decorated with three typical japanese motifs - Bamboo, an open Peony flower and a branch with buds on it. These hair ornaments were used in traditional Japanese hairstyles but they are great for adding a bit of vintage style to a modern updo! This Japanese lacquered hair ornament dates from the 1920s or 1930s ( a period known as the Japanese Showa period) and is in very good condition with just a few surface marks commensurate with its age. The hair pin measures a little over 8 inches in height with the disc section being 1.5 inches in diameter with a thickness of about quarter of an inch. This item could have come straight from the movie Geisha!
