Golden Yellow Flower 1930s or 1940s Bakelite Buckle AS SEEN CONDITION
Here is a glorious golden yellow phenolic resin buckle. This Bakelite buckle is a shiny bright yellow tone with opaque marbling throughout. This vintage buckle consists of two separate layers of Bakelite. First there is a large oval base which has twelve individual petals cut on it with each petal further enhanced with deep cut details. In the centre there is an oval boss of stripy Amber-effect Bakelite to make the flower design complete. Now we come to the faults! When this lovely item was made at least 75 years ago the application of the central boss part was done using two metal screws and whoever carried out this job obviously tightened them too much causing a split to run across the piece, not once but twice from each screw! Now they managed to attach the metal fastening hook and bar without damage so all is not lost! This item remains wearable, robust and beautiful and if you can forgive it a couple of cracks then it could be your bargain! If perfect it would be at least three times my asking price or more! This substantial buckle measures 9.5cms by 6.5cms and the two layers make it around 1cm thick at the centre point.
The truest colours for this vintage buckle are shown by the first and forth photos but the qualities of early plastics make it liable to some colour change in different lights and the colour representation on computer monitors, iPads, iPhones and tablets are always varied. This Art Deco era buckle has two white metal fixings to the back, one a ‘D’ fastener which is set into the Bakelite, the other a strong hook held in place by two screws. If you wanted to use it for a belt you would need another ‘D’ ring or would need to sew a slit into your belt to allow it to fasten.
