Glove Stretchers - Bakelite-Era Plastic faux Tortoishell Circa 1910 -1920 - Antique Costume Accessory
Here we have a pair of faux tortoiseshell Glove Stretchers which date to the first quarter of the 20th Century. This pair of glove stretchers is made of any early plastic composition used to imitate real tortoiseshell. The stretchers have rounded points and brass metal hinge and pins. They are in very good order and open and close easily. Measuring 18 cms in length and being 4 cms at the widest point and with a thickness of almost a centimetre these glove stretchers could have been intended for a lady or gentleman to use.
A collectable dress accessory from a bygone era is the glove stretcher. To understand how important this clever little tool was we have to travel back to a time in history when wearing gloves was absolutely necessary for any lady or gentleman of class! It was usual to wear gloves for daytime and evening occassions. The gloves of this period were often made of soft kid leather and thus needed to be stretched for ease of wear and to reshape the fingers after cleaning. The glove stretcher works on a metal spring which enables it to be pinched open and shut to facilitate the 'easy-on' of a pair of gloves! It is not uncommon to find cased sets of dress accessories which would include a buttonhook, a shoe horn, glove stretchers, glove powderers and other items essential to aid smart dressing.
