Here we have a genuine Antique Edwardian English hair comb - very Downton Abbey! This is a quality piece of early 20th Century jewellery and is the kind of hair ornament that is getting difficult to source. Made of Sterling Silver this comb bears the halllmarks for the Birmingham Assay Office (Anchor) the Lion Passant to show it is 925 quality Sterling Silver and the date letter for the year 1906 which is a lowercase 'f'. We also have the benefit of the silver makers' mark which is R & W in a rectangular cartouche. This is the mark of Birmingham silversmiths Reynolds and Westwood whose studio was in Vyse Street in the Birmingham Jewellery area. This haircomb has a Shamrock or Clover design with a trefoil leaf pattern engraved and pierced to decorate the top of the hair comb. There are also fancy line engravings in the form of swirls and zig zags to add additional decoration. The two tines or prongs of the hair comb are twisted to make the hair ornament more anchored when in place. This antique hair comb measures 11.5 cms in total length with the pretty shamrocks design on the top being 3.5 cms across the width and a little over 3cms tall. This antique silver haircomb is in excellent condition with just some light surface scratches commensurate with its age. This would make a fabulous addition to a collection of antique and vintage hair ornaments or to a collection of Edwardian jewelry. Light and wearable the silver shamrocks haircomb would grace a pretty hair style too.
