Edwardian Hair Comb Ivory Colour with Pink and White Jewelled Flowers Circa 1910 (SOLD)
Decorative hair combs from the beginning of the 20th Century are often jewelled. This example is typical of the English Edwardian period and it dates to circa 1910. It is made of the early plastic celluloid and is in a form which is known as "Ivorine". This material mimicked real Ivory not only in colour but also with the fine line graining effect that is noticed on real, fine antique Ivory objects. Thus it was used to make jewellery, buttons, boxes and is often found backing mirror and hairbrush sets, sometimes stamped as "French Ivory" . This hair comb benefits from a pretty cut out pattern - sinuous curves and swirls with a pointed top. It is further enhanced by a jewelled floral decoration. Seven pretty Daisy type flowers, each consisting of a central diamond white stone surrounded by six pink jewels, each individual round stone claw set. There are three flowers at the top of the comb on a antique metal stem, these graduate down to two more matching pairs of two jewelled flowers, one each side. The comb has a gently curving shape with decorative top sitting above three long, tapered tines or teeth. These shaped teeth hold the hair comb in place when wearing. The cream colouring of this comb combined with the pink and white crystal floral adornments make it very suitable for bridal hairdos. This comb is in excellent condition. Measurements on this antique hair ornament are : almost 7 inches from top of the comb to the tip of the tines and just over 3.5 inches in width at the widest point.
