Ebony Glove Stretchers - Late Victorian - Edwardian - Antique Costume Accessory
Here is a collectable dress accessory from a bygone era - the glove stretcher. To understand how important this clever little tool was we have to travel back to the Victorian and Edwardian era, a time in history when wearing gloves was absolutely necessary for any lady or gentleman of class! It was usual to wear gloves for daytime and evening occassions. The gloves of this period were often made of soft kid leather and thus needed to be stretched for ease of wear and to reshape the fingers after cleaning. This wooden glove stretcher is made of real ebony, and is marked with the words 'Real Ebony' to prove it. Ebony is a valuable hardword and as such is ideal for a tool like this. The surface of these Ebony Glove Stretchers is shiny and has just a few tiny marks commensurate with its age. The glove stretcher works on a hidden metal spring which enables it to be pinched open and shut to facilitate the 'easy-on' of a pair of gloves! It is not uncommon to find cased sets of dress accessories which would include a buttonhook, a shoe horn, glove stretchers, glove powderers and other items essential to aid smart dressing. Back to these neat, small glove stretchers - they measure 7 inches in length, are a tapered quarter of an inch on each side with a width of one inch and a quarter when opened.
