Celluloid Fan from circa 1920s - lime and lemon colours - Interesting Early Plastic

Here is a sweet and functional Art Deco fan.  This nice old fan is made of the early plastic Celluloid and is in good order.  The colour is predominantly lime green but there are swirled patterns of lemon on both guard ends and in tiny patches on the sticks too.  The ribbon threaded through the celluloid fan is the original in a cream colour.   There is some inspiration taken from the horn and tortoiseshell accessories of the early 20th century making this fan work well with 1920s costume.  The fan has button missing and exposing the metal on the handle attachment but it is still quite lovely!  Measurements are when fully opened across almost 11 inches with the struts being just over 6 inches in length.

Fans are a fascinating collectable and an important antique and vintage fashion accessory. They have been used from very early times and by the most primitive peoples as cooling devices and for winnowing and activating fires. They have had a role in ceremony and are often objects of great beauty and elegance. There are some superb examples of fans in many of our museums and the role of the fan has evolved as a courtship device with a secret language and also as an advertising tool - particularly with the paper fans that were used for promoting champagne, night clubs and other things in the art deco 1930s period.
