BABY - Victorian Sterling Silver Baby Brooch -Hallmarked Birmingham 1876

This Sterling silver 'Baby' pin dates to the 19th Century.  It is one of the earliest Baby pins I have found. With a full set of hallmarks on the back - the Lion Passant to show it is Sterling Silver (925 parts fine in the 1000), the Anchor for the Birmingham Assay Office and a Date Letter which is a Gothic 'b' for the year 1876 . It also tells more of its story with the maker's mark of W.C.M being the work of the silversmith William Clark Manton listed as a 'brooch maker' from Hylton Street in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter.  With the word Baby picked out in fancy capital letters, and a pretty engine engraved design all around with a deep, plain rim. These antique brooches were popular Christening gifts and were worn on baby gowns.  The reverse of this silver brooch has a wide guarded clasp and the long pin is silver.  This collectable old silver brooch is an elongated oval shape and is in great condition.  The silver baby brooch measures 1.5 inches by just  half an inch.
