Auguste Bonaz Hair Comb - 1930s in the Victorian Style (Sold)
Here we have a substantial haircomb from France. This fabulous comb is from top designer Auguste Bonaz, famous for his Art Deco early plastic and bakelite jewellery. There is an engraved 'Auguste Bonaz' signature on one of the prongs. This comb appears to be made of galalith for the body and prongs, or tines, with applied celluloid discs. Gently curving the body of the comb is smooth. The discs have an all over faceted design to the front but the comb is completely smooth to the reverse. It dates from around the 1930s but is in the Victorian revival style. It has the look of the Ball Topped Haircombs which were popular in the mid 19th Century and has been made to imitate Whitby Jet. It has a gothic appeal and is very dramatic. This is a large haircomb, measuring approximately 5 inches across and 3 inches down, with each faceted celluloid disc a little over an inch in diameter. The comb, whilst large, is relatively light because of the nature of early plastics. This Victorian style hair comb is in very good condition, is robust enough to wear and would look amazing in the right hairstyle! It would also be a super addition to a collection of early plastic and bakelite era jewelry and accessories or would appeal to anyone who collects the work of Auguste Bonaz.
