Art Nouveau Horn Haircomb - Roses with Leaves - French circa 1890 -1900 (SOLD)
A horn hair comb dating to the end of the 19th Century is on offer here. It has a floral design of three perfect roses with their stems and leaves and even the odd little thorn too. The design is Art Nouveau and there is every chance that this piece could be French. France was a centre for working in natural horn and producing fabulous Art Nouveau pieces. Designers like Rene Lalique loved the qualities of natural horn and created jewellery and adornments based on insects, birds and floral subjects. Natural horn is light in weight yet also durable and lends itself to moulding and carving so is ideal for the manufacture of hair combs. This comb is probably a back comb for holding a bun or twist of long hair. It is a decent size so would be most noticeable in your hair do. The roses panel on top of the comb measures 16 cms by 5 cms and the 22 individual teeth or tines are all 5.5 cms in length. The floral design of this antique hair ornament would make is suitable for a wedding or special occassion. The material it is made from, the workmanship and its charming rose trellis make it desirable to collectors of hair combs and hair accessories too. It is in very good condition with just a few tiny nicks out of the tines. More information below:
