Art Nouveau Hair Comb - Sterling Silver Butterfly Hair Ornament(SOLD)

This butterfly hair ornament is American and dates from the end of the 19th Century into the first decade of the twentieth Century - 1890s to 1910.  The Butterfly Hair Comb is made of Sterling Silver and  is simply marked 'Sterling' on the reverse. This Antique Hair Comb is typical of the light naturalistic style known as Art Nouveau.  Butterflys, dragonflies, birds and flowers were all popular motives for Art Nouveau designers and this beautiful antique haircomb  is a most wearable example.  The butterfly has been hand engraved and pierced from the silver and the top of the sterling silver comb has additional engraved patterns too.  The  two tines or prongs  of the hair comb are twisted to make the hair ornament more anchored when in place.  This antique hair comb measures 10 cms  in total length with the butterfly top being  3cms across the width and a little over 2cms tall.  This antique silver haircomb is in excellent condition with just some light surface scratches commensurate with its age.   This would make a fabulous addition to a collection of antique and vintage hair ornaments or to a collection of butterfly jewelry.  Light and wearable the silver butterfly haircomb would grace a pretty hair style too.
