Art Deco Hat Ornament - Bakelite and Diamante - Superb Large Size Sew-On Accessory - 1920s to 1930s
The Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s was an age when ladies wore the most fabulous hats. The Cloche hat was a particularly popular fashion statement. Hats of straw or light fabrics ( often adorned with flower trims) were the choice for the Spring and Summer whilst wool, felt or velvet were the choice in the Autumn and Winter months. I should think that this fabulous, original sew-on hat decor, which dates to the 1920s - 1930s period, was for the more weighty Autumn and Winter hats. For display I have attached it to a Vintage Velvet Cloche Hat worn in some of the photos by my life-size deco lady model. You will see that this hat ornament is very large, it has a diameter of 3 inches so will certainly get noticed! It consists of a silvered metal frame and rim with open panels and lines of Diamante and black Bakelite plastic. As is the case with old Bakelite pieces the panels are held in place with small screws. The cloche hat ornament has four metal loops to the back to allow it to be stitched in place. I have not cleaned it but feel sure that a gentle rub with a silver cloth would make the silver-plated metalwork more shiny if this was desired. The hat ornament is in very good condition for its age and is robust and wearable but it does show signs of plate wear on the metal and some of the Diamante jewels have more lustre than others. I have taken a close-up photo to show the condition. This hat Jewel could also be used as a dress ornament or could be sewn to the lapel or collar of a coat or jacket.
