Art Deco Celluloid Sew-on Hat Decoration - Circa 1915 - 1930
Early plastics such as Bakelite and Celluloid lend themselves perfectly as materials for sew-on dress and hat accessories. They have qualities such as lightness and a robust strength that have long made them suitable for buckles, buttons and stitch-ons. Here we have a lovely Art Deco sew-on ornament. It is made from celluloid with a distinctive moderne shape of one square overlaying another. The colours are a pleasing orange and cream and the finish is like a pearly shell for the decoration. This lovely ornament dates from the deco years, between 1915 and 1930. It has two raised button-like mounts with pierced holes ready for it to be neatly stitched onto a hat or other item. It is shaped so would sit beautifully on a hat front, particularly on the cloche hats that were so popular in the first quarter of the 20th Century. This sew on Hat jewel is in really good order. It is a nice sized costume accessory being 9.5cms by 4.5cms. This would be perfect for a millinery project or to add to a collection of early plastic and bakelite jewellery.
