Antique Real Tortoiseshell Hair Comb - Japanese - Circa 1920 - Art Deco (sold)
Hair combs of this quaility are increasingly difficult to find. This one is Japanese and has all the simple style and practical qualities you would expect from Japanese work. The hair comb is made of natural tortoiseshell and has a mottled and marbled effect. It has been neatly carved with open palm fan designs to the top. The comb has a large open fan carving to the centre and this is mirrored by two smaller fans on either side. The comb dates to the Japanese Taisho era around 1915 to 1925 and has an Art Deco design to it. This comb would easily hold up a good quantity of hair as it is robust and has seven good long, tapering tines (teeth) The central tine is 8 cms in length and the others graduate in size to the shortest two at either end which are approximately 6.5 cms each. This is an antique hair accessory that would delight a serious collector of Japanese accessories but would also be perfect for a long haired lass with style!
