Antique Brooch - Victorian Sterling Silver with Horseshoe and Riding Crop (sold)
This Antique Silver Brooch would make a perfect gift for a horsewoman with its horseshoe and riding crop decoration. The Victorian brooch is made from Sterling Silver and bears the assay office mark from Birmingham (an Anchor) with a Lion Passant to show it is 925 Sterling Silver . The year letter is a 'q' for the year 1890. This Victorian Silver Brooch measures just over an inch in diameter and is very pretty indeed. It has a pointed triangular pattern around its rim which has been engraved with cuts and stems a little like grass or leaves. The foliate design continues with some applied flowers and trailing leaves. But the main decoration is the Horseshoe and Riding Crop which are very detailed so you can see the plaited tail of the crop and the nails on the horseshoe! This collectable Antique Victorian Silver Brooch is in very good condition with just a few light surface scratches commensurate with its age. As well as the Victorian hallmarks on the reverse there are the makers marks - 'H & W'. The brooch fastens with a long pin and an old fashioned 'c' type retainer clasp. I have left this piece of antique jewellery with some of its patina and it has not been overcleaned as some collectors of Victorian brooches prefer them to look their age. It would be simple to make this brooch very shiny indeed using silver cleaner and a buffing cloth if this was desired.
