Anson USA Gold Plated Arrow Tie Pin

Here is a vintage Anson USA tie clip dating from the1950s.  This is a lovely gold plated or possibly gold fill tie clip in the form of an Arrow that just clips into place. The simple positioning of this clever golden Arrow tie clip adds fun and style to any tie. It is a real novelty piece and is very well designed and of great quality.  It is a design from a Scandinavian jeweller Olof Anderson from his USA Anson Company. His gentlemen's accessories were sold by Tiffany in their stores,so that is testimony to the design and quality.
This tin pin comes in very good order.  From the arrow point to the feathered flight end it measures approx 8.5 cms which appears long. However being a 1950s item it was never meant for for a wide tie as the idea is to set the arrow at an angle to look as if it has pierced the tie - that said  it can sit on ties of most widths.

Here's some information about the maker and his Anson  jewelry company

The Anson Jewellery Company have an interesting history.  The founder Olof Verner Anderson was born in Sweden but emigrated to the USA in 1929 when he was 17.  He founded the Anderson Tool & Die Company in Providence, Rhode Island in 1938 to make tools and casting dies for the jewellery manufacturing industry that is centred there. During World War II, the factory altered their milling machines for war production.  The company became the Anderson Tool and Die Works in 1946 and then shortened its  name to Anson Inc. in 1948.

At this point Anderson, a trained silversmith,  turned his attention to the manufacture of Tie Pins, Tie Bars, Tie Tacks, Cufflinks, Collar Clips and other accessories for gentlemen including chains, money clips and key holders. All these pieces were well-designed, innovative and available in real gold, Sterling silver and also gold and silver fill metals.  The design and appeal of the goods and the high quality of Anson products allowed the company to sell their brand  in the Tiffany stores.

In 1960 the uppercase logo changed to Anson in script so this helps when dating the items.  In 1967 the company added a ladies range of high end costume jewellery. Many of the designs and devices were protected by patents ( another useful clue when dating pieces)  and it seems that Anderson was still filing documents in the US Patents Office in the 1970s for his unique ideas.

By 1983 however the Anson Company filed for bankruptcy and its the assets were eventually sold to C&J Jewelry whose principal shareholders at that time were Jake Jacobsen and Bill Considine.  As well as Anson, C&J also took over the Imperial Pearl Company Inc and according to their website remain in business today - currently with a Providence Rhode Island HQ and manufacturing based in Heredia, Costa Rica. As for Olof V. Anderson he died in 1995 having owned the Anson company for almost half a century.
