A Natural Shell Hair slide or Barrette - Early 20th Century - Art Nouveau
This is a fabulous antique hair clip in natural shell. I’m not sure which shell has been used but the iridescent colours are amazing. If you move the slide it shimmers with tones of pink, purple, green and gold. Using the natural curve of the shell and making the most of the lines that are part of it the maker has added a decorative cut design all around the edge. The attention to detail is fantastic as to hold the back clip device in place the maker has used two decorative golden metal pins in the form of detailed Tudor roses. I would think this fabulous hair grip is a transitional piece dating from between about 1910 and 1920 - the end of the Art Nouveau era and the beginning of the Art Deco era. This antique hair ornament is in really good condition and is robust enough to use and enjoy. This hair slide measures two and a half inches in length and is just one inch wide at it's widest point. The back pin is made of white metal and it snaps shut onto a metal ball. This would make an excellent addition to a collection hair ornaments or vintage costume accessories.
