This two part cut steel buckle has two open oval parts - each with a outside border of faceted cut steel. Within this border each half has a row of larger cut steel pieces arranged as 'a moon, a star, a curve, a star, a curve, a star, a moon'. The cut steel pieces are raised up in relief and have good detail. The buckle measures 3 inches by 1.5 inches. In excellent condition for its age - 180 years old - there are just a few areas of wear as you would expect. I believe it to be a 19th century antique piece from the early years of this century circa 1840. This buckle hooks together in the centre with a tongue and loop style clasp and there are two steel bars, one on each side, to retain the belt.
