Silver and paste in a crescent moon shape decorate this antique hair pin. This is a typical Victorian period hair pin dating from the mid 19th Century but from France rather than Britain. The heading or top of the comb is on a hinge which allows the hair pin to swivel making for comfortable placement within the coiffure. Set into the silver there are 9 top quality faceted paste jewels in graduated sizes, which twinkle just like real diamonds. These stones are beautifully set into the classic Crescent Moon shaped top. There are two hallmarks on this silver hairpin. First is the boar’s head, the mark of the Paris Assay Office, indicating a fineness of 800 or higher on small articles (such as jewellery). This mark was in use from 1838 to 1961. The second mark is that of the maker E.G. with an oak leaf and acorn device. The jewelled Crescent Moon sits on top of two blonde horn tines or teeth. It is affixed there on a metal back plate with screws and this plate appear to be gilded. Condition is very good, it would have been classed as Excellent but there are scratch marks made to the metal plate where it looks like it has been tested to see if it is gold by a Philistine! Oh dear,no offence, but I do get a 'Bee in my bonnet' when people spoil lovely things by testing them - this is a treasure whatever it is made of and only an idiot would recklessly scratch it to see if it was worth scrapping! Luckily the scratch is not too bad and is unseen when the hairpin is in use. This would add a touch of 'Diana the Moon Goddess' to your hairdo! It would be a wonderful antique hair ornament for bridal hairstyles and fabulous to wear to a ball or prom.
