1940's Silver Ballerina Brooch (SOLD)

This is an excellent example of post-war British silversmithing with an Iconic design by Frederick Massingham for the company D.H. Phillips.  It is one of a series that the artist produced in silver in the late 1940s and early1950s which all featured Ballet Dancers. The pins were produced in two sizes, some designs featured a single ballerina and some a couple.   This particular Ballerina Brooch is made of cast sterling silver and is clearly hallmarked in Birmingham with the year mark for 1948. It also has the DHP maker's Mark and a design registration mark on it.   This dancer pin is a small sized example, measuring just 2.5 cms by 3 cms at is widest points.  The ballerina brooch is very detailed, you can see the folds in the dancer's  full skirt  and the curls in her hair.  She is  dancing up on her points with one leg stretched out behind her and her hands raised above her head. What a wonderful gift this would be for anyone who loves The Ballet!  Some of the collection of Fred Massingham's designs are on display in the Jewellery area of the  UK's Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.  The brooch is in good condition and fastens with  a silver guard over a brass pin.
