1940s Buttons and Brooch "Make-do-and-mend" hand embroidered set ( SOLD)
1940's brooches and buttons were often hand-made as shortages of materials led to innovative use of spare scraps of wool and fabric with re-purposing being the name of the game! Here are some sweet hand-made items from the World War Two period. First is a brooch depicting a tied bunch of flowers. This vintage brooch is made from knot stitches which make up the flowers in 3 different shades of pink, purple, green and blue. These flower heads sit a'top dark and light green stems in embroidery thread tied with blue all held within a ring, possibly a large curtain ring, that is covered with blue blanket stitches to frame our bouquet. A simple metal safety pin is stitched to the reverse so the brooch can be pinned to a jacket, cardi or frock. Matching this delightful brooch are four smaller buttons, each made in the same colours and with the same techniques. These five pieces are offered as a set and are quite unique. The condition of them is excellent. The brooch measures almost an inch and a half in diameter whilst each button is almost an inch in diameter.
