1930's Deep Carved Bakelite Compact - Rare and Collectable
This is a very special compact in a fabulous design. It is deep carved Bakelite in shades of tortoise brown and caramel yellow. It dates to the Art Deco Era circa 1930 and I am unsure whether it is American or Continental European. It is a marvellous design in three layers, very functional and very tactile. There are tortoise colour brown Bakelite layers to the top and bottom with a caramel yellow layer sandwiched in the middle. All are held together with a caramel yellow button. You simply slide them to one side to reveal the mirror and the powder well. There are traces of the powder in this well - it looks quite pink so may well have been a rouge. This beauty would have been the pride and joy of a stylish Flapper back in Jazz age. This charming and collectable compact is a rare find. It is offered in great shape and has just a few surface scratches commensurate with its age and a tiny fleabite chip on the yellow layer. They really don't detract from the beauty of this and are probably little souvenirs from its past! Measurements are 8cms by 6cms by almost 3cms and its shape is an oval with cut away straight sides.
