1930's Carved Rose Bud Dress Clip - Bakelite in Amber Colour
Bakelite with Here is a delightful small dress clip dating from the 1930s. It is made of Bakelite which has been hand-carved into an Amber coloured rose bud with deep detail to make each petal. Now a warm colour of yellow this piece was originally ivory coloured but has oxidised to a rich Amber tone. So this Rose is ready to be worn and enjoyed . Measuring 3cms by 1.5cms and being 1cm deep the rose dress clip has a white metal back clip with three little prongs to hold the dress clip in place when worn. The back clip is good and tight and this 1930s dress clip would make a very pretty piece of jewellery to be worn on a vintage frock. A lot of hand carved antique jewelry in the 19th and early 20th Centuries was made of wood, bone, ivory and horn in Europe and once the stable man-made plastic Bakelite appeared this too was used. There was a trend for this kind of work in the Black Forest and also Switzerland and Austria where skilled carvers would create the most naturalistic flowers. I think that this lovely little 1930s rose dress clip comes from one of these areas. The carving for rose bud is very dense and detailed, a lovely old dress clip in great condition which due to the hand carved method of manufacture is totally unique!
