1930s Art Deco Bead Necklace - Hand Carved Early Plastic, Bakelite and Wood
This necklace has all the elements that are looked for in Art Deco era jewellery. First we have two types of plastic used for the different sized and shaped beads. The largest beads are beautiful barrel shape in parchment yellow casein or galilith - an early Plastic of the Bakelite era made from milk. Then to add more detail and interest to this necklace there are some marbled yellow and brown Bakelite beads and also wooden rounds and gold coloured metal caps and spacers. The largest central polished wooden bead is 2cms in diameter and the four carved barrel beads are about 1 inch long and 2cms across with amazing carving whilst the smallest beads on this necklace are the tiny bronze glass spacers. This Art Deco bead necklace has been graduated throughout and skilfully re-threaded on modern, strong Beadalon. Fastening with its original brass barrel twist clasp this necklace is in very good condition. It measures slightly longer than 18 inches in length including the clasp. My guess is that this is a continental European piece - maybe French in origin dating from the mid to late 1930s. It has style and is rare and beautiful. This art deco period necklace would be a super addition to a collection of early plastics and bakelite jewelry and would appeal to anyone who enjoys wearing or collecting interesting beads.
