1930's Art Deco Bakelite Hair Comb
This chunky, robust hair comb dates from the late 1930's. It is made from the early plastic Bakelite and was intended to imitate tortoiseshell. The colour is a mid amber brown with a stronger darker brown marbled decoration like real tortoiseshell. A lot of lovely early plastic jewellery and accessories were made in early plastic materials in the Art Deco era and they remain functional and appealing today. This comb could be used to fasten an updo or just at the side of the hair to lift a strand back. With just two prongs or tines this comb was more likely intended as a side comb where it would sit in either long or bobbed hair. Measuring approximately 4.5 inches by 1.25 inches by half an inch the comb has an upside down pear drop shape to the top and tapered prongs. This comb is in excellent condition.
