French Art Deco Hat Trim 1930s Black Celluloid with Diamante and Metal inlay
Art Deco and French are two words synonymous with "style" when they are used to describe vintage and antique jewellery from the 1920s and 1930s. Here we have a wonderful hat ornament from the Art Deco era. It is made of black celluloid and is studded with bright diamond-effect Diamante jewels. I believe this perfect jewelled ball was designed to sew on to a hat as a hat trim because it simply has a metal ring to the reverse. It would be equally simply to add a loop and wear the sphere as a pendant on a suitable chain or length of fine silk.
Decorative work like this, with little glass jewels and metal pins embedded into early plastic was one of the nicest ways glamour accessories were adorned during the twenties and thirties. You see Cloche hat pins, cigarette holders, brooches, dress clips, scarf rings, beads, bangles and even the heels of dance shoes decorated in this way. This orb has fantastic "dash" inlay in white metal; the little dashes forming a cross on top of the ball and a three lined pattern of "dashes" on the centre of the ball. This Art Deco costume or hat trim measures approx 3 cms in diameter. It is lovely and is in excellent order. It is really up to you how you use it to add interest to your vintage wardrobe.
