EDITH Edwardian Vermeil (Gold Washed) Silver Name Brooch - Edith - Hallmarked Chester 1903

This is a very pretty English Edwardian Silver Name Brooch for Edith. It is quite unusual as it is in a goldwashed silver with some wash loss to the high points like the raised letters that spell the name EDITH.  It is a very attractive design with four individual flower heads applied and with engraved foliage decoration.  The name, EDITH, is picked out in applied block capital letters and this antique brooch has a curved cut outline to it.  It is a quality item with the makers marks 'W.R.S.' and the full Chester Hallmark for the year 1903 ( curly 'c' letter).  It is in good condition and measures 1.5 cms by 4.5cms approximately.  To the reverse it has a firm long pin and fastens to an old fashioned 'c' type clasp.  Name brooches are becoming very popular again and  they have an interesting history.  Name brooches were a great favourite with Victorian and Edwardian ladies.  These old brooches and pins started out as name badges for the staff in large country houses and later became popular sweetheart brooches.  Many were made in Birmingham, England's jewellery quarter, and they are becoming most fashionable again with the resurgence of lovely old names that were popular in the 19th and early 20th Century.
